Picasso in Canada

Discover the many sides of Picasso, one of the greatest artists of all time, and see his first major exhibition in Manitoba in almost half a century. Presented alongside the National Gallery of Canada’s Man & Beast. The Vollard Suite of Prints, Picasso in Canada features the iconic artist’s best work from collections across the country.

Celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, this exhibition brings together 35 works of art by Pablo Picasso drawn from art museums and galleries across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. There are only a small number of paintings by Picasso in Canadian public collections. Several of these works are featured in Picasso in Canada, along with a selection of watercolours, drawings, prints, and ceramic works. Among these pieces is Picasso’s celebrated Femme Assise (Seated Woman), arguably the finest painting by the artist in Canada. The exhibition, curated by Dr. Stephen Borys, WAG Director & CEO, spans five decades of Picasso’s artistic production, exploring a range of themes and images, such as intimate portraits of five of Picasso’s lovers.
